Medical Augmented Reality (AR)

Medical Augmented Reality (AR)

Medical AR brings another dimension to medical education and marketing. AR overlays digital content onto a real-time view of the user’s environment using a smartphone, iPad or other device with a camera. The digital content can be any 2D or 3D medical graphics or animation, enabling us to demonstrate anything from medical conditions to surgical procedures and product features in real time wherever the user happens to be. With AR the possibilities for medical marketing, education and healthcare are virtually limitless.

Why invest in medical augmented reality?

  • Medical and pharma AR experiences attract more visitors to conference booths. These dynamic educational experiences are proven to drive traffic and engagement.
  • To give MSLs and sales reps an edge in the field. Pharma or medical product AR apps make in-person meetings more memorable and engaging.
  • Medical AR is an engaging way to demonstrate the function of a medical product or device in any environment, including conference booths and physicians’ offices
  • Medical AR activities leverage active learning, which is more effective than passive learning. Active participation through AR enhances engagement and information retention.
  • Once created, a medical augmented reality app can be deployed to an unlimited number of devices and anywhere you interact with customers
  • AR is a lasting investment. We design medical AR experiences to be periodically updated for long lifecycles. For example, Rethink Osteoporosis was deployed to multiple congress booths of different sizes and in different countries..

The AXS Studio difference

We’re artists who love to visualize medical science and technology. It shows in the exceptional medical AR applications we create for clients in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. Helping you communicate a new therapy or medical product that will change people’s lives is why we come to work.

Early adopters

AXS Studio was one of the first companies to use augmented reality in the pharmaceutical industry. Our developers were experimenting with AR technology on early smartphones and tablets long before AR hit the medical congress exhibit floor. From the start, we’ve pushed boundaries and brought our clients many firsts.

Unexpected ideas

Augmented reality connects HCPs with your content in ways not possible with other media. For example, we can demonstrate pathology on a live scan of the user or encourage congress goers to search for disease sites in a virtual patient. At AXS, we use design thinking to tap into our collective creativity and discover unexpected ideas for your next medical AR experience.

The right team

Creating stand-out augmented reality experiences requires an exceptional team: creative, multidisciplinary, and science-trained. With postgraduate training in scientific communications, certification, and over 20 years serving life-science clients, we’re unlike any interactive studio you’ve worked with.

We speak your language

The unique AXS Studio Client Services team hails from life science backgrounds. We speak the language of our clients and understand the challenges they face when telling their stories in the highly competitive pharma and medical device industries.

Augmented reality down to a science

We do all creative and production work in house, from concept art and script writing, through UX design, animation, and interactive programming. In this way, we carefully control the medical AR production process, eliminate errors and meet your deadline.

Prepared for success

At AXS Studio, we carefully reference and prepare each medical AR wireframe for client MLR/PRC review specs. This, along with our in-house medical expertise and rigorous development workflow, ensures on-time delivery of your AR application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Simply contact us with a brief description of your project, including your timeline, budget and objectives. We’ll book a consultation meeting with you to review your goals and then provide a detailed proposal for your review.

Most medcomm and healthcare agencies outsource augmented reality projects to non-medical interactive studios. At AXS Studio, all design and development is done in-house by our specialized team. Our medical artists hold M.Sc. degrees in biomedical communications from one of only five graduate programs accredited by CAAHEP. These specialized programs train designers, animators and developers in gross-human anatomy, cell and molecular biology, physiology and pathology.

AXS Studio has over 20 years experience visualizing medical science for HCP audiences. We employ five Board-Certified Medical Illustrators (CMIs) who ensure accuracy in every medical AR experience we create. We speak the language of science and communicate complex concepts more accurately and clearly than other interactive companies that lack specialized science training.

The main factors in cost are the functional requirements and complexity of an AR experience. We account for your project budget when proposing a solution. Our fees include:

  • Content writing
  • UX design
  • Visual asset creation
  • 2D and 3D animation
  • AR programming
  • Testing, deployment and support (on-site or remote)

Content, design and AR development are all handled in house by our long-standing team. This enables us to control development costs and ensure strict confidentiality for our clients. If you’re interested in a quote for a medical AR experience, please get in touch.

AXS Studio fees include concept development ideation), content research and writing, UX and UI design, wireframing, 3D modeling and animation, programming, audio (voice, sound fx and music), application testing, support and training. During development, we prepare wireframes and videos for your MLR (or PRC) reviews and will handle material submissions, if desired.

We’re committed to ensuring your science is communicated accurately. Your AXS project team immerses itself in the literature supporting your content. We compile a comprehensive research deck to support the creation of all the visuals featured in your medical AR experience.

They frequently express relief after switching from another agency. They cite previous challenges, including:

In contrast, clients describe AXS Studio as “a talented and reliable partner”. They cite the incredible quality and attention to detail in [our] work“ and ”the commitment [we] have to pulling off the impossible, Our clients have expressed relief at no longer worrying about making their deadlines. And we collaborate well with their booth and AV vendors, who appreciate that we’re “always thinking ahead and thinking proactively.

When it comes to pharma AR applications, industry leaders rely on AXS Studio to deliver one-of-a-kind solutions “that boost traffic and HCP engagement at … congress booths.” But don’t take our word for it, see what our clients have to say.

Development can take 3–6 months, depending on the project scope. If you’re aiming for a specific launch date, it’s best to start early—especially if your organization has an involved MLR/PRC process. We suggest contacting us for a quote 6 months ahead of your deadline, if possible. Our detailed proposal will include a timeline with project milestones letting your team know exactly when key deliverables are coming.

We recommend targeting 5 minutes or less. HCPs are busy people with limited time to experience your content. Being impactful and concise keeps your messaging focused and gives your audience the highest value for their investment of time. We advise prioritizing three key takeaway message for a medical AR experience.

  1. First, identify your primary audience and communication objectives. Your audience will inform the complexity of your scientific content. Eg., are you speaking to GPs or specialists?
  2. Provide us with your key content resources. These may include MSL decks, scientific posters and journal papers.
  3. Our design and development teams will hold ideation sessions to generate a concept for your medical AR experience. We’ll present this to you in a proposal, which may go through a couple of iterations.
  4. Once you approve the proposed concept, we’ll prepare a content outline for your review.
  5. Next, we’ll create a wireframe that shows the proposed user experience, content and visuals together. The wireframe provides a clear picture of how your medical AR experience will look and function. It will help you gain alignment with all stakeholders before we start application development. After a round of review by your team, we’ll make any revisions and submit the revised wireframe for MLR (or PRC) review.
  6. Once you approve the wireframe, our team will develop the alpha, beta and final versions of your medical AR experience. The beta version is submitted to MLR/PRC review and any changes are then pulled through in the final AR application.
  7. During development, we’ll pretest the AR app at with your booth/AV vendor to ensure it works flawlessly at launch time..
  8. After MLR/PRC approval, we’ll collaborate with you and your booth/AV vendor to deploy the final medical AR experience to your congress booth, mobile devices, website or other medium.

Product and marketing managers commission medical device AR experiences to demonstrate products at congress booths.

Medical affairs and scientific communications managers sponsor medical AR experiences to educate HCPs visiting their conference booths. The AR content is most often MOD and/or MOA education. A medical AR experience created for your congress booth can be deployed to your MSL’s tablets to use in the field.

MSLs and Sales representatives use medical AR apps in the field during physician meetings.

We’ll design your medical AR application to work flawlessly without support by making it easy to use and providing on-screen instructions for your users. Nonetheless, a facilitator will increase participation and enhance the experience of users—hence the reason many companies hire trained facilitators. We can suggest a facilitation vendor that our clients have had great experiences with.

AXS handles the initial design of kiosks and then works with our clients’ booth vendors, who build the finished structures. We also coordinate with our clients’ AV vendors to specify the production hardware and stress test the AR functionality ahead of the congress date. We ensure every aspect of your medical AR experience is tested and show-ready well in advance to ensure a smooth, stress-free launch for your team.
